Miners Offense Erupts, ‘Nooks Fall 15-6

PALMER – The Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks fell to the Mat-Su Miners for the first time in league action on Monday by a final score of 15-6. The Chinooks dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in league play with the loss, while the Miners went to 4-3, including a 2-2 mark in the ABL.

Shane Armstrong received the starting nod for the Fish but would last just 1.1 innings against a powerful Miners offense. The Chinooks struck first on the scoreboard, but Mat-Su posted a six-run first before following with a five run-second. The Fish again attempted a rally in the ninth, posting two runs before being erased.

Chugiak-Eagle River cut into the lead a bit in the fifth, getting their final three runs of the contest. The Miners put their finishing touches on the victory in the sixth inning, as four crossed the plate to make it 15-4. Right hander Adam Oller pitched five innings for the home team and qualified for the victory before turning things over to the Miner bullpen.

At the plate, Westmont University’s Steven Pollex laced three singles, while fellow outfielder James Nevant (Notre Dame) and catcher Mark Lindsay (San Fransisco State) combined for five more hits. Nick Covello drove in the first run of the game for the third straight night and ended up with a single and a double. Six different Chinooks scored a run as the team racked up an even dozen hits in the loss.

The Fish and Miners return to action on Tuesday evening, when they will square off at Loretta French Field for the first time in league play. Matanuska Electric will sponsor Kids’ Night, and details can be found on the Chinooks’ website. First pitch is slated for 7:00 pm.
