Six Chinooks Named to the ABL All-Star Game

ANCHORAGE – The 2014 Alaska Baseball League All-Star Game will take place Sunday, July 20th and will have six members of the Chugiak-Ealge River Chinooks on the National League roster.

Outfielder Steven Pollex (Westmont College), infielders Jon Popadics (Masters College), Jackson Cramer (West Virginia), Billy Arendt (Princeton), and pitchers Kyle McDorman (Charleston Southern) and Thomas Altimont (Abilene Christian) all have been given the nod by ABL coaches to represent the Chinooks.

Pollex jumps out on the stat sheet with his team-leading four home runs.  He carries 10 multi-hit games into the All-Star break and hit safely in eight consecutive contest early in the season.  Despite his solid 5-11 frame, he runs very well and patrols center field as one of the best in the ABL.

After finishing his freshman season at a Division 1 program, Chinooks first basemen and designated hitter Jackson Cramer has shown off his power in the ABL by leading the Chinooks with 11 doubles and a pair of home runs.  The big, left-handed hitting Cramer shares the team lead in walks with fellow Chinooks All-Star Billy Arendt.  The Princeton sophomore has served as the leadoff hitter for the Fish most of the season boasting a .404 on-base percentage.

Popadics joined the Chinooks near the end of June and has only played in 12 games in the ABL, but has impressed the right eyes to play on Sunday afternoon.  The shortstop has incredible speed, giving him great range on the infield to go with a strong arm that can make nearly every throw.  Popadics has already recorded 5 multi-hit games and is hitting a solid .370.

The two right handed starters in McDorman and Altimont have highlighted the Chinooks rotation and stymied ABL hitters on many occasions.  McDorman, without question, has set himself apart as the most consistent arm that the Fish hold in their arsenal.  The Chinooks are 6-2 when McDorman takes the hill while he will carry a 3-2 record and an impressive 2.66 ERA into the All-Star game.

McDorman teamed up with fellow All-Star Thomas Altimont with two other Chinooks hurlers on July 17 for the clubs only shutout of the season against the Peninsula Oilers.  Altimont is another Chinook that has had a limited sample size in the ABL, but he has dazzled with an ERA sitting at 3.78 and has had three scoreless outings in five appearances.  He only allowed four base hits over those three appearances.

All-Star festivities at Mulcahy Field will include a Home Run Derby beginning at 1 pm to be followed by the ABL All-Star Game to begin at 4 pm.  Steve Pollex and Jackson Cramer will represent the Chinooks in the Home Run Derby.
