Behind a dominant outing from Jack Brooker and a hot bat from Phoenix West, the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks secured a 4-1 victory over the Mat-Su Miners.
Brooker set the tone from the opening inning, he threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 11 batters and walking two to earn his first win of the season.
The game's first run came in the fourth inning after Phoenix West doubled and moved to third on a passed ball. Kai Butler delivered in the clutch, lining an RBI single to put Chugiak-Eagle River on the board and give the Chinooks a 1-0 lead.
The Chinooks added breathing room in the sixth. JD Wolff worked a leadoff walk and swiped second before Austin Young drew a walk. West came through again, singling home Wolff to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Nick Moyer lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Young and extend the lead to 3-0.
Chugiak-Eagle River tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning. West reached base with a walk and eventually crossed the plate when Moyer drove in his second run of the night on a fielder's choice, stretching the lead to 4-0.
West led the Chinooks offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, a double, and a walk. Wolff added a double, a walk, and scored once, while Butler recorded an RBI single and Moyer drove in two runs.
The Miners finally broke through in the ninth when Matt Bline singled home a run, but reliever Evan Rossi entered and got himself his second save of the season. The Chinooks are right back at Lee Jordan on Tuesday once again playing the Miners.
